Goiter

An abnormally large thyroid gland.

Goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, which can change the levels of thyroid hormones it produces.

Grave’s Disease or Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis are the leading causes of goiter. Having a diet low in iodine, being pregnant or in menopause, and being over the age of 40 increase your risk of developing a goiter.

Worldwide over 90% of goiter is caused by iodine deficiency. This is less common in North America due to our consumption of iodized salt.
