Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

An autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the thyroid and under production of thyroid hormones.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland leading to inflammation and reduced production of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism).

Hashimoto’s is the primary cause of hypothyroidism. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, unexplained weight gain, and a puffy face. Hypothyroidism is treated by taking synthetic thyroid hormones daily.
