Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

A condition in women where small cysts form in the ovaries.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal syndrome among girls and women of reproductive age where they make higher than normal levels of male hormones called androgens.

This imbalance of hormones causes the development of cysts on the ovaries as well as other symptoms such as hirsutism, and irregular menstrual cycles. Women who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop PCOS as well as those with a family history of the syndrome.
