A disorder where too much parathyroid hormone is produced.

Hyperparathyroidism is the excess of parathyroid hormone in the blood.

Hyperparathyroidism is caused by an enlargement of the parathyroid glands causing excess parathyroid hormone to be produced leading to elevated levels of calcium in the blood. Excess parathyroid hormone can lead to osteoporosis and kidney stones. Hyperparathyroidism can be treated with surgery or medications.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is fairly common affecting 1 in 1000 people.
